Located in Detroit's Cass Coridor, a once notoriously dangerous neighborhood, much of the historic character of the Charlotte Apartments had been stripped in favor of cheap, replaceable materials. The units had been sprayed with a heavy texture to disguise years of abuse. Terrazzo floors and clawfoot tubs had been painted over in a ubiquitous fashion. The design process for the Charlotte Apartments largely involved a reductive process, peeling back layers to unveil original charm and making smart design choices to accentuate what still remains. The end result is a classic meets industrial remodel with very efficient yet functional units that are excitingly fresh yet remain budget friendly.
